Samsung Black and White Laser Printers ML-1740
Samsung ML-1740
Inkjet printers I present is great for small jobs and printing color, but lacking the speed I needed when you print a lot of text. I printed a document page 265, (which took about 40 minutes) and go to the Centre to make three more copies. When they say what it costs, I realized that for the price of three copies, I can go and buy my own personal laser printer. I did some comparison shopping and ended up with economy-minded Samsung ML 1740 laser printers. Here are my first impressions (no pun intended) of this printer.
The unit comes packed with toner, the printer itself, manual, installation disk CD, power cord, but no USB cable. You have to give yourself. The printer is a very compact unit and about the size of a small microwave oven. Printer whole body made of plastic, somewhat fragile look, but good. Setup takes less than twenty minutes and as simple as falling off the length. After installing the required software, and connect the USB cable from the printer to my computer, I print a test page which is very sharp and clear. Easy to load the printer with the paper and has a capacity of 250 pages. Good indeed. Paper exit tray is from the printer or from the rear exit. You can pick out where the paper comes from. In General, out of print, and general good back door out to print envelopes or thicker paper stock. The rear paper exit ' straight through ' top makes outgoing compared the paper doing ' u-turn ' before exiting.
This
printer is very user friendly and has a great software.(Note: from the
reports, it seems the printer does not work with Macs.) I am able to
print up 265 page document without a hitch. There is a button above the
printer toner saver. When this key is enabled, the printer uses only 40%
of toner, which extends the life of the cartridge. Since I only print
text, the difference between the full mode and toner saver mode is not
important. Full mode toner look richer and darker, but enough is
acceptalbe saver mode in quality. After finishing, I need to print a
page 225 manual for my digital camera. I am able to print up to four
images to a page with the Samsung printer software, and shrinking the
entire manual to only 57 pages. There are a couple of photos and
illustrations in the manual halftone. This turned out very good, even on
the toner save mode. DPI (dots per inch) is 600 dpi or 300 dpi for this
printer. I found that 600 dpi only for text. Characters and letters are
very sharp with no ' jaggies '. This small unit produces little heat,
so ML 1740-has a powerful fan to keep it cool printer. I did find
annoying or irritating fan noise. Printer cartridge will provide about
1,000 pages were printed in the usual fashion and about 60% more toner
saver mode. Cartridge that comes with this printer are ' newbies '
cartridge, which means it's not really filled with a standard amount of
toner. Although there has been some complaints about this, It is fairly
easy to refill cartridge refill kit with time spent at a fraction of the
cost of buying a new one.
This printer is an excellent value because the program rebates associated with this device. Consider Samsung 1740 if you're on a budget and want a simple to operate, efficient, ' bare-bones ' laser printers. It is highly recommended.

I've had this printer for home use after years of using Super fancy laser printer in my Office. (...) the printer is amazing: a very good text quality, good graphics and printing very quickly (even at 600 dpi). I will not be using this printer to print photos of my family on it, but for each graphic that you will find it will do well.
Setting it up is trivial Win98 with XP. If you're using linux, the configuration utility will make you go: provides all the functions and controls of the driver window. Actually it took about 2 minutes to set up under Mandrake 9.2 with cups (using a USB port). The Samsung go, go Linux!
I have been reading reviews complaining about the noise level of the printer the ... I find it quite normal, not to worry.
I'm not sure how well it will last because I've only had it for a few hours, but once again from other reviews there seems to be no big deal.
I have made I use the feature "Save toner" and I can't see the degradation of the quality of the prints.
